Changes and Delays Expected in Nonimmigrant Application Process

July 28, 2003

In response to the August 1, 2003 deadline to implement the new personal appearance regulation (explained in the July 7, 2003 item), many consular posts are changing their nonimmigrant visa application procedures. Invariably, the changes will have the effect of increasing the processing time required, both to obtain an appointment and to issue the visa. Applicants should schedule visa appointments as early as possible.

It is critical that travellers planning on applying for a visa abroad check relevant consular web sites, especially those with firm travel plans that may be affected by delays in visa issuance. Procedures are changing daily and in some cases, even pending applications may be affected.
