Stern and Elkind Named Firm of the Year, 2001
August 05, 2002
The Colorado Lawyers Committee (CLC) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to providing and increasing opportunities for children, the poor, and other disadvantaged communities through advocacy, negotiation, and litigation. The CLC includes many of Denver's largest and most prestigious law firms. On June 28th, 2002, the CLC honored Stern and Elkind as Firm of the Year. Following is an excerpt from the awards luncheon brochure:
For more than ten years, the law firm of Stern and Elkind, LLP has quietly and consistently supported the activities of the Colorado Lawyers Committee.
Nancy Elkind has been a member of the Board of Directors since at least 1992. Current law firm partner Emily Curray and former firm members have also been active in Lawyers Committee activities.
Since 1991, Stern and Elkind has demonstrated outstanding leadership with the Colorado Lawyers Committee Immigration Task Force. This project has been a consistent resource to organizations in all parts of Colorado that seek to help the immigrant community. In its early days, the task force, chaired by Nancy Elkind, represented clients on individual matters, presented a forum on immigrants' rights in the San Luis Valley and co-sponsored a training on immigration law.
Since 1995, the Immigration Task Force, along with members of the Colorado American Immigration Lawyers Association, has worked closely with the Immigrant Assistance Program in the San Luis Valley. The Immigrant Assistance Program serves a geographically remote area in south central Colorado that is home to more than 40,000 permanent residents and 10,000 migrant and seasonal workers and is one of Colorado's poorest regions, with much of the population living below the poverty level. The Immigration Assistance Program offers a variety of services, including assistance with immigration applications and petitions for relief. The program also conducts outreach activities to get important information regarding immigration to the community.
The Immigration Task Force, now chaired by Emily Curray, oversees the activities of the Immigration Assistance Program, through case review and regular consultations with the (non-attorney) staff. Additionally, the Task Force provides training regarding changes in the law, as well as guidance on the appropriate limits for the program's work. The Task Force also has in place a referral network of pro bono attorneys who represent indigent clients on immigration matters.
