Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act Signed Into Law.

President Bush signed into law on May 14, the Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act of 2002. Among its provisions:
$150 million authorized to improve and expand the use of technology for enhancing border security.
Consular officers must transmit an electronic version of the foreign person's visa file to INS so that it is available to inspectors at U.S. ports of entry.
Foreign students will be monitored and verified at various steps: issuance of acceptance documents, transmittal to Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs, visa issuance, admission to U.S., registration and enrollment at school, other relevant acts such as changing schools or termination of studies. Schools are required to notify INS if a student has not reported for school more than 30 days after the deadline. Students also have to provide names and addresses of relatives who can verify information about the student visa applicant.
