Asylum or Refugee

You can apply for asylum in the U.S. if you are a foreign national who has fled to the U.S. (asylee) and can establish that there's a well-founded fear of persecution in your home country, based on race, religion, ethnic group, social group, or political opinion.

Asylees can work in the U.S. and may travel out of the country with a Refugee Travel Document
They may also bring their spouses and children to the U.S., provided the relationship existed before the asylum was granted
Asylees can apply for permanent residence status one year after they are granted asylum
