Mr. Stern and Ms. Elkind founded the firm with the goal of providing the very best immigration advice and representation to our clients. As the firm has grown, we have continued our commitment to maintaining a high level of expertise combined with an understanding that our clients are individuals whose lives are deeply affected by the work we do. Our History & Philosophy

Stern Elkind Curray & Alterman was founded in 1985 by Kenneth H. Stern and Nancy B. Elkind. Over the years, it has grown from two lawyers and a secretary to a total staff of 30, and is the largest firm focused on immigration law between Chicago and San Francisco.

The attorneys at Stern Elkind Curray & Alterman are deeply committed to helping bring the American Dream to life.

Community Work & Recognition

At Stern Elkind Curray & Alterman, community involvement, both locally and nationally, is an important component of who we are. Our attorneys work with many Colorado charities and U.S. legal organizations, and have garnered dozens of awards for our commitment to our community and our profession.

Charity work

  • Several of our attorneys are members of the Immigration Task Force of the Colorado Lawyers Committee which oversees the Immigrant Resource Center in Alamosa, Colorado. The IRC provides immigration services to low income individuals in need of legal assistance. Emily Curray chairs the task force.
  • Stern Elkind & Curray organizes an annual in-house auction that raises an average of $2,000 a year for a charity chosen by the staff. Past beneficiaries include:
    • The Pegasus Program, a therapeutic horseback riding program
    • Colorado Rape Awareness and Assistance Program
    • Safe House of Denver
    • The Rocky Mountain Survivors Center, which assists victims of torture who have emigrated to America
    • The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
  • Each year Stern Elkind Curray & Alterman sponsors a "holiday family" referred by Catholic Charities or the African Community Center.
  • Individual staff members also participate in a wide range of charities, including:
    • The AIDS Walk
    • The American Heart Association Heart Walk
    • Fundraisers for pet rescue organizations
  • Nationally, the attorneys atStern Elkind Curray & Alterman have extensive volunteer experience with the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).
  • Kenneth Stern and Nancy Elkind have served as members or chaired numerous Committees. Along with Emily Curray, they've also been chairpersons of the Colorado Chapter of AILA.

Community recognition

  • Both Mr. Stern and Ms. Elkind have been cited in the publication Best Lawyers in America for more than ten years, and were recently both named Colorado Superlawyers by 5280 Magazine
  • In 1993, Mr. Stern received the Jack Wasserman Memorial Award for excellence in immigration litigation, and
  • In 2002, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Colorado Chapter of the AILA
  • In 2005 he received the "Best of the Bar" Award in Immigration Law from the Denver Business Journal
  • Ms. Elkind was named the 2004 winner of the Outstanding Women in Business Professional Award from the Denver Business Journal.
